made in the slow cooker will quickly become a family favorite. Beef stew is the best comfort food and can be prepared in advance with little effort. It’s loaded with carrots, celery, potatoes, garlic and more!

Once or twice a year, we buy a quarter steer from a local farmer. Now that local farmer happens to be my sister in Newhartfordangus. It’s nice to know where the meat comes from and how it’s raised, as well as being healthier and cheaper. Of course, when you buy half a steer, you get a variety of all cuts. I know exactly what to do with steaks, roast and ground beef. But sometimes I pull out a cut of meat that I have no idea what to do with it.

The meat stem was one of those cuts. It’s not your “normal” cut of meat that you get from the grocery store, but it’s loaded with flavor and can be very tender if cooked well. The first meal I made with him was a meat cane soup.

BEEF SHANK OSSO BUCCO

The beef stem can also be known as stem meat or Osso Bucco. This will be useful if you ever order a steer with all the cuts, I’ve seen it labeled in all three ways.

The stem meat comes from the vanguard of the steer just below the breast. It is the horizontal cut of the two front legs. It is naturally lean, very tasty and tender when cooked slowly.

The meat stem will become very tender when made in the slow cooker. I love using my slow cooker on busy days or days when I’ll be out and about.

Making soups and stews in the slow cooker is the best! Everything is marinated and comes out perfect! A slow cooker brings out the flavor of food. Plus, it uses less electricity than an oven!

The slow,

moist heat of a slow cooker gently cooks the meat without harmful compounds. You can use a slow cooker or slow cooker setting in an instant cooker for this recipe.

busy mom, I almost always go easy when it comes to cooking! I love food as much as the guy next door, but three meals a day can be exhausting. This meat cane stew recipe is very simple to make and only requires a pot.

If you use

an instant pot, you can use the sautéing setting to seal the meat and sauté the onions and garlic. Add the broth, tomatoes and other vegetables and cook in the slow cooking environment. This makes cleaning so easy!

WHAT VEGETABLES TO USE IN THE STEW?

One of the reasons I love stew and soups is that it’s made with so many different vegetables and broths. This is the best healthy food!

The best vegetables for meat stew are potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, celery and tomatoes. You can use fresh tomatoes or canned tomatoes. If the use of canned tomatoes does not drain the juice, it adds a delicious flavor to the broth.

Red potatoes are my favorite potatoes for stews, but any kind of potatoes will do!
