Our slow cooker chicken shawarma recipe is perfect for summer.
It’s super simple to make and oh so tasty with fresh salad, yogurt dressing and hot flatbreads.
Easy weekday dinner – tidy!
I know you probably think slow cooker recipes are more of a winter thing.
But honestly, our slow cook shawarma chicken is just sensational for summer.
The good thing about using the slow cooker in the summer is that it doesn’t heat your kitchen the same way oven cooking does.
One of our favorite slow cooker meals to make!
So it’s good for really hot days.
Our summer slow cooker chicken thigh recipe is simply lush. It’s super easy to prepare and cook.
And just serve it with hot flatbreads, salad and a yogurt dressing.
So it’s almost like a chicken shawarma wrap.
Slow Cook Chicken Shawarma Ingredients
for Marinated
Chicken
- 6 Large Skinless/Boneless Chicken Thighs – Choose good quality, free-range or organic chicken if you can, otherwise choose high-welfare meat.
- 1 tablespoon Olive oil: You can use rapeseed oil if you prefer, this is only to lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker.
juice of a
- lemon – choose a good
- seasoning of juicy homemade shawarma – see below Homemade
Shawarma chicken seasoning mix I use
a simple spice mixture for slow cooking shawarma chicken
1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon
- paprika 1
- teaspoon cilantro
ground 1/2
- teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2
- teaspoon chili flakes
pinch of
- sea salt pinch of
- cracked black pepper
For the
lemon yogurt sauce
- 1 tablespoon plain yogurt – I use Yeo Valley Greek Yogurt because I think the thicker creamy texture works very well.
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise – when it comes to mayonnaise in our house it has to be Hellmanns.
- Juice of half a lemon: again, be sure to choose a good juicy lemon.
To serve
4 flatbreads, I
- use magnificent flatbreads from Crosta & Mollica Piadina breads, they only take a couple of minutes to warm up in a dry pan and taste great. These are the best store-bought flatbreads I’ve found so far!
- 2 Little Gem lettuces – These small lettuces simply shredded are ideal to serve with our tasty shawarma chicken.
- 1/2 cucumber
– simply cut into half moons
- 1 red pepper – sliced, if you prefer, you can use grilled peppers from a jar, it’s up to
you.
- 150g baby plum tomatoes: you can use red tomatoes simply cut into slices or opt for a mixture of inherited tomatoes in different colors.
- chili sauce Spicy – okay, this is optional, I love a little extra extra heat and currently my favorite hot sauce is Nando’s garlic PERI-PERI sauce, it says half on the bottle, but don’t be fooled, it really has a big impact! I love this sauce! If you’re buying a bottle, you should simply try it on avocado toast! Very well!

How to Make Slow
Cook
Chicken Shawarma
Our slow cooker Shawarma chicken couldn’t be easier! It only takes a few minutes to prepare and throw away the slow cooker.
- Simply wipe this inside the slow cooker with a splash of olive oil and then place the chicken thighs comfortably side by side, drizzle a little more olive oil and the juice of a lemon
.
- Sprinkle over ground cumin, paprika, ground cilantro, ground cinnamon, chili flakes and season well with salt and black pepper.
- Cook over high heat for about 4 hours until chicken is cooked well, heated to a minimum of 165°F (check with meat thermometer; for food temperature guidelines, take chart to Foodsafety.gov).
- Once the chicken is cooked, crush the meat and then serve with salads and flatbreads.

- Our slow cooker shawarma chicken is delicious served on hot flatbreads or pitta breads with salads and gravy

- Or shred the chicken and stir the rice, making a simple bowl of shawarma rice. I tend to add a lot of fresh salad to this and a tablespoon of hummus.
- Top up the nachos and melt the cheese, add some salsa and guacamole sauce on the side for an extra delicious treat!
- Just make yourself a great shawarma chicken salad and skip the carbs altogether: add lots of shredded cabbage and lettuce, add cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, olives, really make it delicious.
