What is Silken Tofu?

5-Minute Korean Silken Tofu

Tofu is

a popular ingredient in Korean cuisine and is used in many different dishes, including Dubu Jorim (Korean braised tofu), Soondubu Jjigae (Korean soft tofu stew), and Doenjang Jjigae (Korean soy paste stew) that I have previously shared on my blog.

This Korean-style silk tofu is one of my favorite dishes to prepare, as its ease of preparation and seductive flavor make it the perfect choice for any time of the day, especially on days when I’m feeling a little lazy to cook a full meal.

This soft tofu dish is traditionally served cold, but can also be served hot with a microwave or vaporizer, depending on your preference.

However, it is truly one of the easiest and fastest ways to prepare tofu and contains all the essential flavors of Korean cuisine.

It requires

silky or soft tofu, which has a delicate texture that melts in the mouth that pairs beautifully with the crunchy aromatic vegetables that melt into the sauce

.

The neutral taste of silk tofu along with the fragrant and tasty sauce is really a combination made in heaven.

This is one of my cold dishes for summer too, as the cold tofu soaked in the delicious sauce is wonderfully refreshing, especially in the summer months when it can get too hot to work with heat.

What do I need to make Silken Tofu?

This soft tofu recipe has to be one of the easiest recipes I’ve shared on the blog so far and requires only a handful of ingredients commonly found in the pantry. Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need

:

tofu (soft tofu)” /> Silk tofu:

  • I recommend using silky or soft tofu that is sold in a rectangular shape, and not the cylinder shape that is great for soups/stews. Firm or extra firm silk tofu will also work, but it may not be as silky and delicate as the soft type.
  • Soy sauce, sesame oil,

  • sugar, roasted sesame seeds and Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) or crushed red pepper: for the sauce.
  • Green onion, garlic and chili: for aromatics. I used green chiles in this recipe, but feel free to use any type of chili and adjust it to taste. You can also skip this altogether if you prefer the sauce to be smooth.

And that’s it! All the ingredients you need to make a delicious portion of tofu with soy sauce.

How

to remove tofu from the box

This recipe requires the tofu to be plated in its entirety, which can be a difficult task to master, but I wanted to share an easy method to remove your tofu from the packaging without damaging it.

Tofu box

To safely remove the tofu from the package, flip the box and trim the edges of the box with a pair of sharp scissors (as shown in the photo above), turn it and remove the plastic.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can carefully pull the sides of the box to separate the tofu from the container, then let some tap water pass into the space to create a layer of water between the packaging and the tofu.

Then, simply remove the excess moisture and cover the tofu with a plate to flip it over, and you’re done! The tofu must come out in perfect condition for you to enjoy it.

How to serve

silk tofu

This soft tofu dish

is served cold straight from the fridge, making it incredibly convenient to prepare and refreshing during the summer.

If you do not prefer the tofu to be cold, you can leave it on the counter for about 20 minutes to bring it to room temperature, Poach it for 1-2 minutes in boiling water, or heat the tofu in the microwave for about 30 seconds to heat it quickly.

This silk tofu is incredibly soft and delicate, which makes it easy to serve as a whole to eat with a spoon, but you can also cut it into small pieces to serve.
