To sell property and casualty insurance, you need a property and casualty license. But first, you must first pass the licensing exam in the state in which you want to sell insurance. We recommend that you follow these best practices for studying in order to pass your property and casualty exam.
start studying early/set a study schedule
The average person taking the insurance exam should expect to spend 35-40 hours studying to pass the property and casualty exam. It is recommended that you study for the exam over the course of a few weeks, rather than trying to cram the exam week. The best way to avoid overcrowding is to set a study plan and stick to it. focus on state exam outline
You’ll want to print out the outline of the Statewide Property & Casualty Agent Exam so you understand what material will be covered in each of these topics, as well as how it will be weighted on the exam. the state test outline explains how many questions are included in each section of the test. we recommend that you focus on the sections with more questions so that you can master the key topics.
remove distractions
For your brain to absorb new information, it’s important that you do your best to avoid multitasking and focus on what you’re studying. this can be much easier said than done. You may find that setting up a study schedule over a period of a few weeks will help you create time where you can focus solely on preparing for the test. try to eliminate distractions around you, such as your phone, television, or the internet whenever possible. Some people find that the Pomodoro Technique helps them focus better; this is where you set a timer for a 25-minute interval to focus on a specific task, followed by a 5-minute break.
use practice tests
Be sure to use practice property and casualty tests in your studies. This will help you assess how well you have absorbed the information you have read and determine which areas still need your attention. it is a good idea to take at least one practice exam while mimicking the exam conditions. this will help you determine if you are pacing yourself correctly to complete the exam in the allotted time.
take an exam preparation course
Although not all states require it, it’s a good idea to take an insurance certification course for your property and casualty licensing exam. Not only will it help you make sense of the material, but it will also help you prioritize and stay on track with your study schedule.
