what is xolair?
xolair is a prescription medicine used to treat severe allergic asthma in adults and children 6 years of age and older. It is prescribed when asthma is persistent and does not improve after treatment with corticosteroids. xolair is taken by injecting it under the skin. You can buy it as a powder that needs to be mixed into a solution before you inject it, or in single-dose prefilled syringes.
The medication may also be used to treat an allergic skin condition called chronic spontaneous urticaria, more commonly called hives. it may be prescribed to adults and children over 12 years of age for this condition.
Asthma is a disease that causes the lungs and airways to become inflamed. this inflammation narrows the airways and reduces lung capacity. it can make you wheeze and cough, feel tight in your chest, and make it hard to breathe.
Allergic asthma is asthma caused by an allergic reaction, such as a reaction to pollen, dust mites, or tobacco smoke. when you inhale such substances, your immune system reacts to them, although they are usually not harmful. this triggers the inflammation that causes asthma.
Urticaria is a type of skin rash that is also often caused by an allergic reaction. The rash is usually made up of red, raised, itchy bumps, which can also burn and sting. As you come into contact with a substance that triggers your allergy, your immune system causes inflammation in your skin that leads to hives.
xolair helps with both allergic asthma and hives by stopping your immune system from causing inflammation. this can reduce the severity of allergic asthma and hives, providing relief from their symptoms.
active ingredients of xolair
The active ingredient in xolair is called omalizumab. It works by blocking the antibodies your immune system releases that cause inflammation.
Inflammation is a natural response triggered by your immune system to protect itself from and get rid of harmful substances. It is caused by the release of a type of protein from the immune system called an antibody. In the case of allergic reactions, your immune system can cause inflammation that is not needed, which can lead to health problems such as asthma or hives. Omalizumab helps with this by attaching to antibodies, stopping them from working and stopping the inflammation process.
