Getting your California insurance license is the first step to becoming an insurance agent in California. Whether you’re interested in selling property and casualty insurance, life insurance, health insurance, or any combination of those lines of authority, this article has the information you need to get started.

step 1. what insurance licenses do you need?

The first step in getting your CA insurance license is choosing which licenses you need. The most common licenses new insurance agents obtain are owned & accident license (p&c), life and medical insurance license (l&h).

The types of insurance policies and products you will sell will determine which licenses you need. Here are some examples of the types of policies you can market with each license:

  • property and casualty insurance license – auto insurance, home insurance, business insurance, etc…
  • life and health insurance license – life insurance, annuities, medicare, health insurance, etc…
  • Most insurance agents and producers choose to obtain personal injury and personal injury licenses, but if you plan to specialize in only one category, then you don’t need all licenses.

    step 2. fingerprinting and background check

    California requires all applicants for insurance licensesto provide fingerprintsprior to being licensed. Giving your fingerprints will initiate a background check. if you have prior misdemeanors or felonies, this may affect the outcome of your licensing efforts.

    schedule to have your fingerprints taken before your license exam. precision biometrics is cdi’s preferred provider, call (866) 361-9944 to find the location closest to you. the fingerprinting fee is $59, including the $17 fbi processing fee, the $32 doj processing fee, and the $10 cdi contractor ongoing fee.

    You also have the option of having your fingerprint taken at a psi testing center. the total processing fee for fingerprint impressions taken is $68.95, which includes all associated fees.

    To ensure that your fingerprints are recorded correctly, you must pay the fingerprinting fee and complete the following:

    1. fill in the applicant information portion of the live scan service request form.
    2. Keep a copy of the license scan form for your records. take the completed bcia form 8016 to a doj authorized live scan provider.
    3. Give a copy of the form to the live scanning service provider, who will provide you with the Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number that is assigned to your fingerprint impressions. If your fingerprint impressions are rejected, the ati number will allow you to retake your fingerprint impressions free of charge.
    4. in addition, if a license is not issued within twelve months of the date fingerprints are submitted, a new set of fingerprint impressions will be required.

      step 3. california insurance pre-licensing education

      After you’ve determined which licenses you need, you must now take your California insurance pre-licensing education courses.

      Most people choose to take their insurance pre-licensing course online. these courses are created specifically to give you the skills you need to pass the exam. the types of licenses you choose (also known as “lines of authority”) will determine which courses you take.

      Each line of authority in California requires twenty (20) hours of pre-licensing education. This means that if you want to obtain a property and casualty license, you must take forty (40) hours of pre-licensing, and life, accident and health must also take forty (40) hours.

      You will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. keep this certificate, as you will need it when you take your exam.

      California requires that twelve (12) of those hours of pre-licensing education must be in the California Insurance Code and Ethics.

      step 4. california insurance license exam

      The next step after completing all the pre-licensing courses is to take the insurance exam. will perform an exam for each line of insurance you wish to take out. life, accident & health, and property & accident lines (p&c) are combined as one test each, so it wouldn’t take four tests, it would only take two total. you must pass your exams within one year of completing your pre-licensing education course.

      This is a supervised test, which means you will be in a controlled environment with a person watching you. For people who have not tested in a situation like this, they should be aware of this fact and work to control their nerves before taking the test. A great way to get some experience with insurance testing is to take an insurance practice exam.

      For psi testing site, the fee for each test attempt is $88, plus a convenience fee of $33 ($121 total) for each “Combined Producer Examination” (p&c and l&h). When you submit, you must have a photo ID and the original pre-licensing education certificate. You have one hundred ninety-five (195) minutes to complete each exam, which have one hundred and fifty (150) questions.

      You also have the option of taking your exam at no convenience charge at a cdi exam site. the fee for each exam attempt is $55, for each “combined producer exam” (p&c and l&h).

      Neither psi tests nor the california department of insurance advertise what a “passing score” is or how the tests are scored. After taking the exams, you will receive a pass or fail letter. if it fails, your letter will include a “diagnostic report indicating your strengths and weaknesses.”

      The insurance license tests are intentionally difficult, but not impossible by any means. you should study to the point where you are comfortable with the information before attempting the exam. failing the exam is not the end of the world, but keep in mind that you will have to pay the fee every time you try to take the exam.

      step 5. california insurance license application

      Once you have completed your exams and fingerprinting, you are ready to apply for your license. If you have more than one line of authority for which you have passed the exam, be sure to apply for all of those lines.

      The fee for an online application is $188 per line combined. if you want to get your property & casualty and his life, accident, & health licenses, you will need to apply for each license separately and pay the $170 fee each time.

      step 6. application review

      Once you have submitted your application and met all other requirements, the state will review your license application. Your background check will also be reviewed.

      If everything is within acceptable standards, your license should be issued within two to three (2-3) weeks. If there are items from your background check that need to be reviewed, it can slow down the issuance process. if this is the case, the state may contact you to provide context for the issues they have encountered.

      You should receive an email informing you of your license acceptance, but the folks at the licensing office recommend that you don’t trust this email. they prefer that you use the license search tool. To check and see if your license has been issued, you can search the California Department of Insurance’s license lookup tool yourself.
