An automobile is a four-wheeled motorized vehicle that people use to get from one place to another (transportation). Cars typically travel on roads that seat between one and eight people, have four wheels, and carry primarily people rather than goods.

When we look at its history, German inventor Carl Benz invented the first automobile which is Benz Patent-Motorwagen in the year of 1886. In the 20th century, automobiles began to be used globally and became widely available in different models and styles.

Cars have controls for driving, parking, passenger comfort, and a variety of parts. When you open the hood of your car or view the underside of your car, you usually find the engine, transmission, axles, differential, suspension, etc.

These are the internal parts of the car, but what about the external parts? Now when we come to the exterior parts of the car, many people have no idea what parts are made of and what their function is.

body shell #1

The vehicle body is the functional backbone. It is the body of a car that rests on the chassis and fits the engine, mechanical and electrical systems, seats, etc. it is designed to support the weight of all the components that are present in the car and even handles the weight of the passengers.

hood or hood #2

Car bonnet is also known as bonnet in some countries. This is the type of thin sheet cover that is hinged and rests on the engine of motor vehicles. includes engine, battery, coolant, windshield fluid, cooling fan, compressor, alternator and many more.

The hood allows direct access to the engine compartment for maintenance and repair purposes. In addition, it also protects these parts from direct sunlight and dust. A hidden latch is commonly used in conjunction with the hood to hold it securely when looking inside your car.

front bumper #3

The bumper may seem like an additional part, but the simple structure actually plays an important role on your automobile. Bumpers are generally bars that protect a vehicle when it hits something.

The function of the front bumper is to protect your car if a sudden collision occurs. in this case, it absorbs most of the impact during low-speed collisions to prevent serious damage to the driver, vehicle and passengers.

rear bumper #4

The rear bumper is designed to prevent serious damage when you unfortunately hit a wall when turning in reverse. Reduces or prevents physical damage to the front and rear sides of vehicles in low-speed accidents.

These parts of the car body usually absorb the impacts of the car accident. The rear bumper is basically made of steel, aluminum, rubber or plastic and mainly protects the trunk, grill, fuel, exhaust and cooling systems.

bumper grille no. 5

The bumper grille covers the front body of the vehicle and allows the engine to stay cool. When you drive your car, it draws air in through the grille which serves to provide ventilation through the engine compartment.

Mainly, it protects the radiator and allows cool air to enter the car’s radiator. In addition to the front location, they are also located on the front wheels for brake cooling, on the hood for cabin ventilation, or on the rear decklid on rear-engine vehicles.

They are usually made of strong steel and can effectively protect the front of the vehicle. In addition, the design of this accessory gives a stylish look to your vehicle and also provides real protection.

headlights #7

Basically, everyone knows that the main function of car headlights is to illuminate the road and facilitate safe and fatigue-free driving. There are two types of headlights, low beam and high beam.

These headlights are attached to the front end of the vehicle. they allow the driver to see the road in the dark, while signaling to other drivers that a car is present. There are types of lights that are used in cars and each one has its own function.

fog light no. 8

The purpose of fog lights is to allow brightness in situations where visibility is less than 100m. They help illuminate under the fog to see the road surface and avoid additional rays from the fog. There are mainly two types of fog lights used in vehicles.

  • Front Fog Lights: Many front fog lights are selectively yellow because they filter out the blue component of white light, which is the brightest. however, not all yellow lights are fog lights, and not all fog lights are yellow.
  • Rear fog lights: are more useful than front fog lights. they are a bright red light (similar to a brake light) that come on in low visibility conditions to make the vehicle more specific for light traffic. they are useful when you are driving much slower than usual and when there is a vehicle behind you, they can dazzle other drivers into stopping.

indicator lights #9

Indicator lights are available in red, orange and some are white. they can be located at the front, rear, and sometimes the left and right sides of the car. they are used to indicate a desired change of direction, either turning left or right or exiting into traffic.

You should use them at the right time to give other drivers enough time to react and adjust to your signal. once you have completed the turn, make sure the indicator is off; otherwise, you may confuse other drivers.

wiper blade #10

Almost all vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, etc., have wiper blades and they are very important for the driver’s clear vision. these are used to clear snow, water and/or debris from the front window of the vehicle so the operator can see what is in front of them.

They are very useful when it rains, the raindrops on the windshield constantly block the driver’s vision, which can lead to serious accidents. they are made of rubber which is degradable and becomes less effective over time. that’s why it’s important to replace them every 6-12 months.

radiator #11

The radiator is located just behind the front grill of your car. it is located in the center of the vehicle’s cooling system that monitors and regulates the temperature of the engine and prevents it from overheating.

its purpose is to keep the engine coolant at the proper level. As coolant circulates through the engine, it heats up, and the cooling fins inside the radiator cool the fluid as it passes over them.

radiator supports #12

The vehicle’s radiator is supported and mounted by a mechanism called a radiator support. it is a frame made of steel, plastic or aluminum that protects the radiator from damage by securing it under the hood of the car. it also houses the condenser assembly and cooling fan system so they don’t get damaged while the car is running.

roof panel #13

The hood panels are also important body parts. these are used as a cover that fills the gap between the hood and the windshield of the car. it also supports the dashboard and ensures no unwanted parts get into the wiper system or cabin filter area.

#14 quarter panel

is a side section of a car body that usually wraps around the wheel well, between the door and the trunk lid, or between the door and the hood. supports the rear panel and other rear panels which may include the trunk of the car as well as the rear fenders/bumpers.

fender #15

The fender is the curved part of the car’s body that sits over the wheels and holds them in place. It is not only a safety component, but also improves the overall appearance of your vehicle. its main function is to shield and protect the passenger compartments by preventing sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

fender liner #16

On each type of vehicle, each wheel has a separate fender. The function of fender liners is to prevent dirt, mud, water, environmental toxins and other impurities from seeping into the engine compartment and causing serious damage.

In addition, it also helps protect cables and other components inside the wheel well from corrosion. Driving a vehicle without a fender liner is not recommended as it acts as a buffer and barrier between your car’s engine, hood, radiator, headlights and windshield.

roof #17

A roof is the top of a vehicle that sits over the passenger compartment, protecting vehicle occupants from sunlight, wind, rain, and other outside elements.

Car roofs are often lined with roof liners that provide insulation against heat and noise, and also hide wires and hardware for electrical components, antennas, and other accessories.

#18 sunroof

The sunroof gives passengers a clear view of the sky, keeps the car ventilated and lets in sunlight, creating a feeling of open space. this is a type of panel on the roof of a car that slides or can be removed to let in light.

These are quite expensive as you will have to pay extra for all the mechanisms that make the sunroof work. They are also high maintenance because the rubber, glass, motor, and all other components require frequent maintenance.

#19 mirrors

There are mainly two types of mirrors used in vehicles which are side mirrors and rear view mirrors.

1. rearview mirror

These are also known as exterior mirrors. These mirrors are located on the exterior of vehicles to help the driver see areas behind and to the side of the vehicle or outside of the driver’s peripheral vision.

in addition, it will alert the driver about possible accidents that happen from behind. The benefit of convex side mirrors is that you get a wider view of each side of the car, which helps reduce blind spots.

2. rearview mirror

They serve multiple purposes to help keep you safe as a driver. Gives you an alert driving experience by allowing you to see behind your vehicle without turning your head. In addition, they are especially important when a vehicle is traveling in reverse gear.

car doors #20

A door is a type of opening, usually hinged on the outside of a vehicle. sometimes it is attached to other mechanisms, such as a track to get in and out of the vehicle. There are different types of car doors available that most people may not be aware of.

Doors often include windows for visibility from inside the car and can be locked to secure the vehicle. these are operated manually or with the help of power supplied by the vehicle. power doors are used in minivans, luxury vehicles or modified cars.

window glass #21

The basic reason for using glass in car windows is visibility. whether at the front, side or rear of the car, glass-managed visibility is extremely useful.

Glass allows passengers to see where they are going and allows natural light or artificial street lighting to enter the vehicle. Two types of window glass are commonly used, single layer tempered glass or laminated safety glass.

#22 quarter window

It is a type of side window that is located before the glass of the front door or after the glass of the rear door. on some models, the fixed side window can be placed in the corner or on the “c-pillar” of the vehicle.

provide a quick glance of the road around the vehicle so the driver can safely turn, speed, park or change lanes. These windows are often found on older vehicles. these are small in a triangular shape at the front and separate from the main window.

door handle #23

Door handles help the driver or passengers get in or out of the car. Door handles are the most important component as they contain door locks. Usually we use the door handle to unlock the car from outside or inside. There are different types of door handles available depending on the car model.

#24 trunk or trunk lids

The trunk lid (also known as a dickey) of an automobile is the main storage or luggage compartment often found in the rear of the vehicle, such as a sedan, coupe, or convertible.

The trunk of a car is more than just storage and should be used for the real purpose of transporting goods. it is an important storage space, so it is necessary to clean it regularly. Also, keep in mind that if you load more luggage, the engine will consume more fuel.

#25 fender

Whether you have a car, SUV, or truck, getting fenders for your vehicle is a must. this is useful when your tires are constantly exposed to mud, dirt, rocks, salt, water and other elements on the road.

As the name suggests, fender flares are designed to trap dirt and stones and ensure they don’t fly directly at your vehicle from the front and rear. a car without fenders will require more regular maintenance.

wheels #26

The most basic and important parts of a car body that have always been in use are the wheels. These are circular shapes that generate rotary motion and are responsible for moving the car from one point to another.

The tire is the rubber part that surrounds the wheel and adheres to the road surface. Although the wheels can spin without tires, the car doesn’t go very far. without them, the car’s wheels would skid faster on the road without moving forward. Today, there are different types of tires readily available in the market.

hubcap #27

is a decorative disc on a car wheel that covers the center part of the wheel. the function of the hubcap is to cover the wheel hub and wheel fasteners to reduce the accumulation of dirt and moisture. it also improves the overall structure of the wheel.

When you drive without a hubcap, all kinds of dirt and debris get trapped in your tires, which can cause tire wear. by having a hubcap, foreign particles do not damage your wheels and provide a longer lifespan.

panel #28

The dashboard is the control panel of any type of vehicle. this is also known as the dashboard or instrument panel. it is located inside the center console of a vehicle and is usually located directly in front of the unit.

The dash displays the driver’s tools and controls to operate the vehicle. it has simple controls (eg steering wheel) and a series of instruments to display speed, fuel level and oil pressure. modern types often have infotainment, climate control, and entertainment systems.

plate number 29

Due to government motor vehicle law, it is required to have a license plate on every vehicle. The license plate reflects the very specific details of the vehicle and consists of four important elements.

It also gives a unique identity to the vehicle. Today, it is preferred that all vehicles on the road display the registration on the front and rear of the vehicle.

#30 taillights

taillights take into account the safety aspect of the vehicle. These lights allow your vehicle to be seen in poor visibility conditions and alert other drivers that you are slowing down. On most vehicles, the taillight is red and the brake light is a brighter red.

The taillights stay on when you turn on the headlights or when the parking brake is set. while the brake light will come on immediately when you apply pressure to the brakes. so the brake light and taillights are not the same.

wrapping it

In conclusion, the car is beneficial for its comfort. The above mentioned body parts are very essential for every vehicle. without these parts, the vehicle may not perform well on the road and this can lead to serious breakdowns or accidents.
