What is Treacle Sponge Pudding?
Treacle Sponge Pudding
is a steamed sponge pudding that has a layer of golden syrup. The golden syrup creates a delicious sticky icing for the steamed pudding while cooking.
But what is confusing for many, is that there is no treacle in a treacle sponge pudding. Instead, molasses is replaced with golden syrup.
Because of this, treacle sponge pudding goes by many names. It is also known as syrup sponge pudding or golden syrup sponge pudding. Although keep in mind that everything is one of the same.
Maple syrup steamed pudding
You can also transform it into maple syrup steam pudding. All you would do is swap the golden syrup for maple syrup and then everything else is cooked the same way.
I’ve also done the maple syrup version, but I prefer the taste of golden syrup.
best way to cook steamed treacle pudding is to use an instant pressure cooker or other similar electric pressure cooker. For example, this steamed treacle sponge can also be made with the Ninja Foodi.
The idea is that you prepare yourself in steaming pudding bowls and then lower them into your pressure cooker with plenty of water and vaporize under pressure. Although on the recipe card below, we will go into detail about this, so that it can be very easy for you.
It is much faster and easier compared to the old-school method of steamed puddings on the stove.

Treacle Pudding Recipe Ingredients
Syrup – The first ingredient that goes into your bowl of steamed pudding is your golden syrup. I love buying the squeezed bottles as it makes it so much easier to cook and you don’t have as much sticky clutter in your kitchen.
Sugar – To make an easy treacle sponge, you’ll need some melted sugar. It does the best job making cakes or sponges and creates the perfect steamed sponge too. I always have a big bag in my kitchen cupboard.
Flour – And just like any sponge cake, you’ll need a little flour to combine it all. But unlike many cakes, like our air fryer chocolate cake, you only need a small portion of flour.
Eggs: You will also need 1 large egg at room temperature to beat the dough. As well as a small portion of milk to make it creamy.
Butter – A small amount of butter is also required and, again, much better if it is at room temperature, but of course it is not essential.
Then, for the kitchen gadgets we’ve used in this treacle steamed pudding recipe, it just became our Instant Pot. We have this one and it’s my favorite and great for desserts and so ridiculously quick to make a steamed pudding.
Also, we recommend that you head to our instant pot recipe category, as we have many electric pressure cooker recipes and have been using instant cookers for 5 years.
