: Usually has meat like cooked ground beef, burger, rice, and smoked paprika flavors. Use red cabbage soup- In addition to or instead of green cabbage/cabbage salad.
Add ham
– Add leftover slow-cooked ham for a protein-packed soup
.
Add chicken: Use leftover chicken from a previous meal or use roast chicken. Shredding it, slicing it or dicing.
Add Asian/Chinese flavor: Consider adding soy sauce, Sriracha sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, Worcestershire sauce instead of Italian seasoning.
Add
sausages: Add pork sausage or soft or even spicy Italian sausage for a protein-packed soup.
Add potatoes:
White or sweet potatoes would make a more filling soup. You can use buckets or shredded if you want.
Add
spinach: Vegetables add flavor and nutrition
.
Add beans, such as black, red, white, or canned chickpeas. Drain and rinse.
Make it plentiful: Mix pasta, couscous, quinoa, or rice near the end when adding frozen vegetables. They must be precooked. Keep in mind that the soup will become thicker as the beans absorb all the broth. Additional broth can be added to dilute it again.
Make it creamy: Add heavy cream or whole coconut milk for a dairy-free version. Keep in mind that coconut milk will add a different flavor.
Give it a spicy kick: add flakes of crushed red chili or cayenne pepper.
Try other seasonings, such as Mexican, Cajun, or Indian blends to get a different flavor profile.
This
is
different than cabbage roll soup, because it does not contain rice or ground beef, which is common to that soup. This version is a much lighter and low-calorie option.
How to make the soup thicker? Continue cooking the soup in the slow cooker without a lid until the liquid is reduced to the desired thickness. Some people like to mix a suspension of cornstarch, but I don’t think it’s necessary. This is supposed to be a thinner “broth” soup.
How to make the soup thinner? Add more broth or water.
Use low-sodium ingredients: This prevents the food from becoming too salty, especially with regard to butter and broth.
What kind of cabbage to use? Thinly sliced green or red cabbage or a bag of shredded coleslaw works well.
What kind of vegetables to use? Use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables that contains carrots, green beans, peas, and corn, but you can really use the vegetables you prefer.
Do not drain stewed tomatoes: You can add tomatoes and liquid to the soup because everything adds a lot of flavor.
Lemon juice vs. lemon juice:
Lemon tastes much better in this soup, but lemon juice is a good alternative
.
Adjust the seasoning: add more or less according to your personal preferences
.
Add frozen vegetables near the end, because if they are added at the beginning with the rest of the ingredients, they will overcook and disintegrate.
Refrigerated Storage – In a sealed container for up to 3 days
.
Freeze– Cool completely. Then pour into a sealed bag or container for up to 1 month.
Reheated– From thawing, in the microwave or on the stove.
