It’s much easier to control the level of spices, salinity, and calories when making Chinese recipes to take home. This orange chicken is a family favorite! My kids love it! It is the perfect balance of sweet and sour and has a lot of flavor. The chicken is super juicy thanks to a technique called “velvet”. I diced the chicken in cornstarch and then cold it over high heat to caramelize the outside and seal the juices. This will really give your favorite orange chicken to run a run for its money!

How do I make this slow cook orange chicken?

It only takes 3 simple steps and 10 minutes

: Prepare the chicken

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a wok and sauté the chicken for 2 minutes until golden brown. It won’t cook completely, that’s the job of the slow cooker!

Next, add the ginger and garlic and sauté for a minute or so. Add the chicken and garlic to the slow cooker.

Add the sauce ingredients to the pan in which the chicken was cooked to deglaze the pan. This extracts a lot of flavor and helps remove the extra “sweetheart” from the bottom of the pan.

Add the sauce to the chicken in the slow cooker and mix to combine. Simmer for 2-3 hours or until the chicken reaches 165 degrees.

Add a quick suspension of cornstarch to the cooking pot and cook for a couple more minutes and then serve.

Can I raise or lower the spicy heat a bit?

Absolutely! If you want more heat, add some Sriracha sauce to your serving after serving. To lower the heat, simply completely omit the crushed red chili flakes when making the sauce. This is ideal for feeding the whole family: no heat for children, extra spices for adults!
